Tandem Pilots Wanted!

Laura Cluxton who
has very reduced sight and relies on pilots to get any cycling other than turbo training has been riding on back of a tandem in some TTs this year. Husband Joe and others from Stirling BC have been doing pilot duties recently but additional volunteers would be welcome. Laura is looking towards riding in events such as the Commonwealth games. For reasons of balance etc. the pilot should be 5' 6" or taller, good build and good bike handler.

10th. February 2015
Thanks to Iain McLeod for this report on the National AGM.

VTTA AGM 31 Jan 2015
The Scotland Group was represented by delegates Iain McLeod and Alex Munro, with our secretary George McLaughlan as an observer and Derek Stewart there to collect his prizes.

Proceedings started with a buffet at 12 noon, followed by the Prize Presentation. Those present to collect prizes ranged from 46 years old Adam Topham for the BAR to 84 years old Peter Horsnell for the Three Distance, with Derek there as joint winner of the 10 and second in the 25.

It was then on to the AGM agenda, with chairman Jim Burgin taking us through it with the help of a few humorous remarks.
Some points of interest:
Item 3. Subscriptions – no change, but apparently there are some anomalies relating to Hon Life members that need to be checked.
Item 5. This was connected to a legacy which has been left to the VTTA. It was withdrawn after concerns were expressed that it could cause legal and financial problems. It will be revised and presented at a later date.
Item 6. This means that the NEC (National Executive Committee) would not be able to change a Group’s decision to suspend or expel members. Carried.
Item 8. Medals to be awarded instead of certificates for winning teams in the BAR. Carried, 24 for, 8 against.
Item 9. Election of Officials. The only change was that Carole Gandy replaces Alan Colburn as President. Alan will become a committee member.

Yorkshire delegate had been asked to propose that Ladies prizes be awarded for some of the competitions.
Divided opinions, some think better to re-adjust standards tables to make ladies more competitive in longer distance events.

Midlands delegate opened up discussion on awarding Group Team prizes instead of Club teams in National championships.
Divided opinions again, and on whether to have teams of six or three.

It is up to members to think about these topics and put in proposals for rules changes at the next AGM.

Sad to report that SVTTA member Robert Cooper died last Saturday following a short illness.

Robert was a long time member of the Law Wheelers, an active member of the SVTTA and was for a while a member of Stirling BC. As well as being a regular on the time trial circuit recently he got himself "up to speed" in the Glasgow Velodrome. Robert was great company on training weeks in Mallorca, where he was renowned for going up the steep climbs in the big chainring.

Robert had a business, Cooper Brothers, supplying car tyres, and operating petrol stations, with premises in Newmains, Shotts and Cumbernauld.

His funeral will take place at
10.00am on Saturday 2nd August at Cambusnethan North Church, Cambusnethan, Wishaw ML2 8NN.

30th. June 2014
Firstly, here are the latest race times compiled by Mr. Harris: 2206.pdf

Secondly, news that Bob Gibson has been taking part in the Queen's Baton Relay, carrying the baton as it passed through Stonehaven on the 29th. Bob was very proud to be nominated by the best club in the North East (his own words!), Aberdeen Wheelers.

We understand that Sandy Lindsay MBE of Deeside Thistle also carried the baton for a leg of the relay on its way to Peterhead.

Thirdly, Scottish veterans have had a very successfull time at the British Masters Track Championships with medals a'plenty including one for our own Track Secretary Gordon Johnstone. Hopefully a full report will folllow..

Last, but by no means least, Derek Stewart had a wasted journey all the way down to East Anglia for the VTTA 25 Championships. The race was abandoned due to a thunderstorm and torrential downpour and Derek didn't get to ride at all. By the time his start time came around the course was dry again..

23rd. June 2014
The minutes of the committee meeting held on 14th. April can be found here.

22nd June 2014
An update on the Ben Smith 25 Championship on 6th. July.
Law Wheelers and the SVTTA have had quite a few hoops to jump through with regard to course and strip selection, plus a clash with the Queen's Commonwealth Baton Relay.
The result is that
the course is now confirmed as the Blairdrummond circuit with an earlier-than-planned start at 07:00. The strip will be at Blairdrummond Hall.

15th. June 2014
Latest results from our TT secretary.

10th. June 2014
As mentioned in the March 2014 Veteran, Isabel Campbell MBE celebrated her 100th birthday in Nov 2013. The Scotland group had hoped to mark the occasion at their annual prize presentation in January 2014 with a gift and a special cake. However, Isabel was spending the winter with her daughter in Mallorca. So, unfortunately Isabel did not get the chance to enjoy the cake, and it took a while to arrange presentation of the gift, a silver pendant.

We are pleased to be able to say that the pendant was handed over to Isabel by our secretary George McLaughlan and Willie McLuskie during their annual holiday in Mallorca in May. We heard that Isabel was delighted with the pendant and pleased that her friends still remember her.

6th. June 2014

11th. May 2014
Times from the mid-week events and the weekend here.

Also, David Pritchard and Jim Cusick headed south the previous weekend for some racing and here is a brief report in David's own words:

'A couple of results from last weekend when down in Englandshire. Sun 4th RTTC series Bassenthwaite HTT,15.1 miles, 1lap for Vets, Big Jim Cuisick, got 4th vet on actual time, I was a more modest 22nd, Jim was 8th Vet on target time, I was 19th. Quite a hard TT, with a nasty headwind the last mile for good measure.

Mon 5th Kent Valley Road Club, Shap Hill Climb, reduced to 7 miles due to roadworks, started on the outskirts of Kendal and went up the A6, with the last half mile on an unclassified road, with two wee horrible digs to the finish. I finished well down the field in 27th place. I was passed by the British HC champion, Teyvan Pettinger, who was making it look easy, He won of course, more than a minute ahead of the next man'.

Finally, news that Caithness Cycling Club's Roger Sewell is returning to England to live. Roger has in the past organised the 12 hour championship alongside his other events up north. The Scottish Group send their best wishes for the future to Roger and his family.

7th. May 2014
Congratulations to Derek Stewart who on bank holiday Monday became (joint) V.T.T.A. National 10 Mile Champion at Tring in Hertfordshire.

In dry and sunny conditions with a 15 mph southerly wind on the boomerang shaped E/W course Derek rode 22:53 to tie on standard with 'young vet.' Rob Pears' whose blistering 18:53 also came out at +7:57 on standard.

It was a relief to Derek to ride so well after his bad luck of last year when he was thwarted by mechanical problems.

The weekend results round-up can be found here.

3rd. February 2014
News from our representative at the national VTTA AGM, Iain McLeod, that the Performance Awards are to go and that the Standard Awards will return for 2014. Many of you will be very pleased to hear this news I'm sure.

From Iain:

"There were three proposals relating to Performance Awards and Standard Awards. The outcome was that item 5(i) was approved, meaning that Performance Awards will be stopped and we go back to having only Standard Awards. I understand that this will be put into effect this year, but I expect we will hear from the NEC as to how this will be implemented. e.g. do we use last years times / distances or start with a clean sheet".

19th. January 2014

By all accounts the new format of a lunchtime presentation was very well received and our thanks go to George Skinner for once again organising a very successfull event at McQ's in Bannockburn.

Photos of the presentation of the awards can be found on the Gallery page or click here.

All present were very pleased to see that Mhairi and Gavin Laffoley had managed to make it over from Fife. Mhairi has sent the following message of thanks:

"I just wanted to thank everyone for giving Gavin and I an enjoyable afternoon at the Vets Presentation Lunch on Sunday.  The Vets meant everything to my dad and he was a member for almost 51 years and was happy to encourage cyclists who turned 40 to join the organisation.  Ali too was proud at being a member of the Vets and he was really pleased when he achieved his standards in 2013, after having missed out for a couple of years due to work commitments.

When Ali was tragically taken from us I asked my dad if he wanted me to make a claim for Ali's standards and there was absolutely no hesitation in his response of yes.  It was, therefore, a great honour for Gavin and myself to be among friends yesterday receiving Alistair's medals, which had been so thoughtfully placed in a nice presentation frame.  This frame will now be displayed proudly in my home for everyone to see.

Finally thank you also for my bouquet of flowers and for honouring my family through the minutes silence that was held.  I hope to have the courage to be at events in 2014 and look forward to seeing some of you then".

18th. January 2014
Past member of the group Frank Gamwell (Perth United) passed away on the 13th. January after a three year battle against cancer. Frank came late to the SVTTA but still managed to put in some very good performances. He was introduced to the Group by David Mitchell, also of Perth United C.C.

3rd. January 2014
More devastating news from Mhairi Laffoley I'm afraid: her mother Margaret passed away yesterday afternoon after a short illness. She was admitted to hospital only 2 weeks ago and the speed of deterioration was unbelievable.

Her funeral will be held at Kirkcaldy Crematorium on Monday 13th at 10:15 and then followed at Dunnikeir House Hotel.

The Scottish Group send their sincere condolences to Mhairi at this very difficult time.

23rd. December 2013
The Ivy CC enjoyed their Christmas dinner on Thursday evening at the Torrance Community Hall, with SC Gold Badge of
Honor, Ian Thomson in attendance along with Les McLeod, Kenny Clarke, Peter Reilly and nephew Stephen, and many others. Head cook and bottle washer, Willie McLuskey, was ably assisted by Hyslop Dickson, Shaun Campbell and George Hardie who ensured that everyone enjoyed the evening – and the fare.

A number of the Royal Albert CC members, having braved the inclement conditions, sat down to enjoy their Christmas meal at the Hollandbush Golf Club, Lesmahagow. Accompanying them were the ‘less inclined cycling enthusiasts’ that travelled by car making the number attending in excess of 50, of which a good number were also members of the SVTTA. After the Christmas Pudding was scoffed and members were enjoying their coffee the various club prizewinners and club champions were then presented with their well earned trophies.
On the 7th December, a contingent from the Law Wheelers, which included four Group members, attended the Last Shift Inn at Braehead, Forth, where they enjoyed an early Christmas Lunch before several of them set off for home in some very unpleasant weather conditions: it did not seem that bad in the car!

21st. December 2013
It is with much sadness that we report that Iain Mcleod's wife died today after a short illness. The funeral will be held at Falkirk Crematorium at 9:30am on Saturday 28th December. No flowers please, but Iain would like any donations to go to Strathcarron Hospice or MacMillan Nurses. Refreshments and light chat thereafter at Bonnybridge Golf Club. All welcome.

2nd. December 2013
SVTTA member Alex Munro of Lancashire Road Club was presented recently with a medal by Chris Boardman at his club’s 90th Presentation & Dance, for his efforts in the 50TT. It transpires that Chris Boardman has now bought a house in Aviemore,  so Michael Devlin’s son whose bike shop is in that town may soon be getting a famour customer calling in.

New Press Secretary James Skinner may find himself writing about his own exploits in the next edition of the magazine: James 'came a cropper' the other day in an argument with a car. Fortunately there were no serious injuries and the driver has accepted responsibility

We're pleased to hear that Jock Milne (see 11th. November) is making a good recovery.

Minutes of the Group's recent AGM can be read here.

11th. November 2013
Sadly Jock Milne has taken a tumble on the ice over the weekend and has sufferred a fractured hip as a consequence. The Group send Jock their best wishes for a speedy recovery.
